: Say “Gino’s” to any Salinas denizen and you’ll likely elicit a sigh, punctuated by the words “artichoke bisque” or “blackened chicken fettuccine.” This place holds the triple crown for local dinner spots: good food, friendly service and utter reliability. It’s Italian-grandma casual, dressed-up enough to bring a business client, homey enough to celebrate your ten-year-old’s birthday. The artichoke bisque is a rich alchemy of local artichokes, tomatoes and cream. Blackened chicken fettuccine is enveloped in a garlicky cream sauce --- it should come with a “nap ahead” warning. Meanwhile, calamari “salad” is a well-intentioned attempt to make you feel good about downing a plateful of tender-crispy fried squid distributed over lettuce. The soup and salad combo is truly wallet-friendly at $8.95. Don’t arrive in a hurry --- food is made to order and worth the wait. |
