This joint has all the vintage touches you’d expect from a family-run barbecue joint---and it is, in fact, a Houston institution that has been serving sausage, ribs and beef sandwiches wrapped in waxed paper since the early 1980s. And Green's is still a family-run establishment---although the Green family themselves sold it to another family back in the early nineties. Fortunately, the current owners know a good formula when they taste one. The sauce recipe remains unchanged; all meats are still soaked in a tomato-based sauce thinned with vinegar and lemon juice and spiked with a rich blend of black pepper and other spices. Large slices of white bread are still offered to sop it all up. And the cool strip-center storefront dining room feels safe and small-town. Because they don't serve cold beer, iced tea is the recommended beverage.
