About the restaurant: Napoleon "Na" Bonner and his wife Maggie launched a little chicken shack in tiny Mason, Tennessee, just outside Memphis in the 1950s. Using their secret recipe, they offered spicy fried chicken that became the stuff of local legend. Son Vernon (nicknamed Gus) inherited it, then opened a few more locations inside the city of Memphis before branching out to other areas of the South and beyond. The downtown Memphis outpost, with its kitschy, vinyl checked tablecloths, remains the most popular.
Food & Drinks: Cold beer is served alongside tender, crispy fried chicken (the spice factor varies by the day), baked beans, mac ’n’ cheese or deep-fried pickles. Homemade pies of various sorts, including classic sweet potato and rarely seen chess, are on the dessert menu. Be patient after ordering because meal preparation can take a while at Gus’s, but the result is worth the wait. Beer and wine are available when dining in.
