Hershel’s marks the tree line for good, kosher-style delicatessen fare in San Diego County: North of here, no matter how hard you search, you’ll come up with bupkis. We like Hershel’s blintzes and smoked fish platters at breakfast, its amazing selection of double- and triple-tier sandwiches at lunch---we would gladly settle for the chopped liver or pastrami on rye and count ourselves lucky---and for such classic dinner offerings as stuffed cabbage, roast beef brisket in mushroom gravy and, best of all, chicken-in-the-pot with a great, glorious matzo ball. You don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy Hershel’s, but it does help to bring an appetite, especially if you plan to tackle one of the impossibly huge wedges of chocolate cake, slathered with whipped cream.
