The Desert Hog isn’t some exotic animal, but rather a term of endearment given to this outpost of the famed Hog’s Breath Inn along California’s Central Coast. Founded in Carmel by legendary actor (and former mayor) Clint Eastwood, the La Quinta counterpart offers a more contemporary setting in Old Town. Indoor and outdoor dining are coupled with second-story views of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The menu includes appetizers, soups, salads and sandwiches, such as the balsamic portobello and goat cheese hoagie stacked high and full of flavor. It’s not without a bit of Hollywood kitsch. There’s the "Gran Torino" lobster sandwich, and the “Dirty Harry” dinner featuring a chopped steak with wild mushroom-mustard sauce. The bar area serves shareable plates, which prove to be a bargain during the daily happy hour from 3 p.m.-6:30 p.m. No matter where you are within the restaurant, near one of the indoor fireplaces or on a cozy bar stool, murals of Eastwood abound, which is sure to make any fan’s day.
