Hot Lips Pizza Restaurant Review:
Hot Lips is a longtime Portland leader in organic and sustainable restaurant ownership, from the ingredients used in its pizza to the vehicles used to deliver the pies. Thick and chewy pizzas --- more abundant than a spare, thin-crust "artisan" pie --- are made with locally ground wheat. Toppings feature local vegetables and house-cured sausages. (A marginally appealing corn and almond gluten-free crust is also available.) There are quality versions of standard pies (margherita, pepperoni) along with creative combos such as artichoke-bacon-chicken, feta and local greens, pear and Brie, and squash with hazelnuts. Both the meat-lover's pie (house-smoked ham plus chicken, meatballs, Italian sausage, mushrooms, onion and olives) and the veggie nirvana (tomato sauce, roasted pepper, onion, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, kalamata olives and chopped garlic) are knockouts. Try the sodas made in-house and brewed from local fruit: apple soda from freshly pressed apples or cherry featuring Northwest sweet-and-sour cherries. Should you want your pizza delivered, it may be done so via bike, hybrid, or an all-electric car. Family-owned since 1984, Hot Lips is now a six-store operation.
