Hula Girl Restaurant Review

: Hankering for Hawaiian food? Head to Shirlington to sample the menu at the metro area’s only Hawaiian restaurant, a takeoff of chef-owner Mikala Brennan’s former food truck of the same name. A native of those tropical islands, Brennan really knows her home cuisine. An island favorite is Spam, here presented as an appetizer called Spam musubi, which is an interpretation of Japanese sushi with Spam slices wrapped in sticky rice and seaweed and accompanied by a dipping sauce. Lunch and dinner selections dip further into Hawaiian dishes, with everything from chicken katsu (panko-crusted boneless breast cutlets) and grilled mahi mahi to root beer sticky ribs, Auntie Marialani’s Hamburger Deluxe and Kalua pork and cabbage. Check out the exotic cocktails and assorted wines, all of which pair well with the malasadas (deep-fried donut balls) and the Kona coffee pots du crème.
