Jimmy's Famous American Tavern Restaurant Review:
About the restaurant: Former punk rocker and Guttermouth drummer James Nunn is the force behind Jimmy’s Famous American Tavern, channeling his other great passion, food, into a lively gastropub. After a decade on tour, Nunn worked at Hollywood’s Pig ’n Whistle, then jumped to Laguna Beach’s French 75, before taking the reins at this hoppin’ joint in Point Loma.
Food & Drinks: Yachties and locals alike will go for the old-school cocktails like the Bees Knees melding gin with fresh lemon and house-made clover honey syrup. While a few salads and lighter fish dishes can be found, it’s hearty comfort and bar food that punctuates the menu: giant buttermilk- and dark beer-battered onion rings, Southern fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, and Zinfandel-braised ribs. The one dessert is a crowd pleaser: warm chocolate chip cookies smothered in vanilla bean ice cream and hot fudge. Brunch calls for Benedicts, bananas Foster french toast, and the JFAT Famous Bloody Mary with a pepperoni-wrapped blue cheese-stuffed olive and a beer chaser to boot. An outdoor fire pit overlooks the marina and beckons as a pleasant spot for social gatherings. The bar scene inside is lively and fun with upbeat music.
