Up or down? Take your pick; either will lead you to inviting surroundings in which to enjoy fresh Asian cuisine. Mount the steps to Joss’s glossy, handsome rowhouse dining room, topped by an elegant curve of blonde wood ceiling and accented with an embroidered wedding kimono. It looks like a place to dine fine, and it is: the sushi and Japanese small plates are little jewels, too pretty to eat, too tasty not to. Trenchermen beware, though --- there are no stick-to-the-ribs entrées offered, and satisfying a big appetite might run you into some serious change. Downstairs, in the Snack Bar, the décor is more casual and teahouse-like, and the menu selections run to noodle dishes, dim sum, and such Chinese-accented “tapas” as octopus hush puppies and pork belly sliders with crushed peanuts. The dessert list keeps in the spirit with such items as green tea ice cream and banana tempura. During happy hour, you can accompany your beer, wine or saké with discount-priced sushi and appetizers.
