Just St James is a large and impressive restaurant, but it should be; the original premises housed a bank. The hallowed halls resound to the sounds of people enjoying themselves in the different spaces, which offer a bar, restaurant and private party rooms, rather than the sound of cash being counted. The cooking is generally good with occasional misses, though the top British ingredients in season are spot on. The menu is well divided into starters and lighter dishes like breast of pigeon with a summer bean casserole, or courgette and pine nut soufflé. Go for a main course of classic grilled calf’s liver or one of the many fish offerings. Desserts go the comfort food route and there’s a good choice of English wines. There’s also a bar menu with dishes like club sandwiches and fish cakes. Best of British set 2-course lunch £18.50, 3 courses £23.50.
