THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Kevin Restaurant Review:
Chef Kevin Shikami, well known for his long sojourn at the dearly departed Jimmy's Place, has his own restaurant---a stylish little bistro that he opened with his brother, general manager Alan Shikami. The Asian-accented décor---a yin-yang logo repeated in everything from the wooden door handles to the frosted-glass ceiling fixtures, wood-rimmed reddish-brown textured paper rippling down exposed brick, reliefs of plants on painted walls---sets the stage for his inspired fusion cooking. Lustrous tuna tartare swathed in a complex wasabi-soy sauce is a delight when paired at dinner with spicy hamachi. The menu changes often, but chili- and-garlic-spiked shrimp tempura, wild mushroom and goat cheese pot stickers, Alaskan halibut in olive oil-basil broth and roast rack of lamb with spicy bean glaze typify Shikami's imaginative combinations. He has an especially deft touch with fish. The desserts are terrific, too, including the chamomile rice pudding and milk chocolate mousse. Service frequently falters when there's a surge in business.
