So unobtrusive it’s hard to spot even when you’re looking for it (there’s no sign in English on the front), and so small a party of six would swamp the place, this Japanese lunch counter probably hasn’t changed its hand-written menu in the thirty-plus years it’s been here. Have the ramen, the udon or the beef sugar peas since they are all good, but we’ll take the mackerel every time. Broiled to a crisp-skinned succulence, it’s delivered in minutes---like everything else, on a tray that also holds small bowls of rice, miso, tofu and cabbage salad. It’s like having a meal in Kobe.
