Some years ago, la Madeleine began as a dependable source of breads, pastries and real French coffee, as well as decent versions of such Gallic standards as quiche and onion soup. These days, at least at lunch and dinner, the views of Jackson Square are its prime attraction. Pizza is at best undistinguished, salads are humdrum, and no self-respecting French cook would claim the sauces on the main courses as his or her own. Pastries are a cut above, although the kitchen's creativity doesn't reach far beyond napoleons, éclairs and the like.
