THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED La Sirena Clandestina Restaurant Review:
South America meets the Midwest at this fiery hot-spot, which offers a daily line-up of empanadas, updated pisco sours and killer swordfish ceviche, meant to be scooped up with house-made crackers. John Manion (Branch 27, The Southern) may have roots in Brazil, but it’s experience in Chicago kitchens that also informs the fresh-as-can-be offerings. What’s more, the sultry, rustic setting is perfect for sampling soul-warming dishes, like hearty seafood stew; grilled snapper with piri-piri sauce; and grilled sweetbreads with vibrant salsa criolla. It’s exactly the kind of heat that gets you through the city’s darkest days. Add that to the fact that nothing feels convoluted, right down to the small, affordable wine list and stunning-in-simplicity alfajores, shortbread-like cookies filled with dulce de leche.
