: In 1903, the Little Gem Saloon opened in downtown New Orleans and operated as a hotbed of jazz and spicy food for about a decade. Since that time, the building served many purposes, but it has once again assumed its former function as a vibrant dining and music destination. With two bars and a balcony overlooking the hustle and bustle of the Central Business District, and a rustic, saloon-themed interior, Little Gem Saloon serves lunch and dinner to the tunes of local up-and-coming musicians, as well as a host of big name entertainers. The menu stays the same all day with comfort food such as mac 'n' cheese and seafood gumbo, and entrées and small plates, including barbecued shrimp and fried boudin cakes. This is the place to discover “Southern soul food” --- try the crawfish cheesecake. Desserts change regularly, but they, too, elicit the feel of old New Orleans, especially the house-made ice creams. Look for about a dozen wines by the glass and a selection of well-chosen half-bottles, or “Little Gems.” |
