THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Lola Restaurant Review:
Though anchored on Watts Street, a thoroughfare perpetually crammed with bumper-to-bumper vehicles awaiting their turn at the Holland Tunnel, Lola is an oasis. With a dark wood-bedecked crescent moon-shaped dining room around a sunken performance area, this SoHo eatery and music venue is easy on the eyes. But Lola is a treat for all the senses: whether it’s a band playing---usually smooth soul or jazz---or if the charismatic owner, Lola, is working the room, going from table to table, charming guests, it’s impossible to not feel like you have a second home here. And then there’s the food. Cornmeal-crusted calamari, garlic-loaded escargots (served in a flower-shaped phyllo concoction), mussels (served with cubed bits of andouille sausage to really pack a flavor punch), and flaky pistachio-encrusted salmon round out a Southern-accented menu loaded with hits. There’s also a long and creative cocktail list (and a short list of French and new-world wines).
