M5 is tucked into a corner of The Residence, an apartment building near the bustling SouthPark Mall, and provides a nice respite from all that bustle. The menu goes local when it can (Anson Mills polenta, local greens) and changes seasonally. A wood-fired grill turns out inventive flatbreads (fig-and-prosciutto proves addictive), steaks and chops. The appetizer of grilled octopus is charred yet tender; the fall acorn squash soup is as eye-appealing as it is satisfying. Desserts come divided into three servings---ideal for sharing. The wine list is intriguing, and the international samplers (three generous tastes for $15) are a fun way to try some new wines. Look for daily lunch specials ($15 for three courses) and daily deals from desserts to martinis. The outdoor patio stays open most of the year (heaters come out in the cold weather).
