THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mallory Hotel Dining Room Restaurant Review:
This venerable, affordable hotel is a favorite with visiting golden-agers and young scenesters alike. The deeply dark Driftwood Lounge maintains a noir-ish feel and has been a favorite hangout for actors from one or two theaters in the neighborhood. The charming dining room offers legendary retro breakfasts and brunches with such items as ginger waffles and puffy German pancakes. Dinners are conventional---pork chops, broiled snapper, steak, maybe fried razor clams if youre lucky. Part of the fun is feeling transported back to the 1940s. Take your coffee in the marble-columned lobby, and pretend youre in a Philip Marlow film. Incidentally, James Beard always made a visit to the Mallory dining room on his return visits to his hometown. Could there be a better endorsement?
