This former hunting lodge, built in 1917 on a hill overlooking Tomales Bay, is loaded with rustic atmosphere and charm. A mere hour north of San Francisco, it's the perfect place to get away from the rat race, whether for dinner or overnight. The five-course, prix-fixe menu changes daily and gets more elaborate and expensive as the week progresses. First courses focus on salads made from stunningly fresh and flavorful, locally foraged, farmed or produced ingredients like briny oysters, earthy mushrooms, sweet beets and creamy cheeses. Grass-fed beef in the form of juicy steaks or tangy, sauced short ribs, or sparkling, seasonal fish modestly paired with potatoes satisfies like a home-cooked meal, if your mom is Alice Waters. Desserts can be a light dish of berries and panna cotta in the warm months or a gooey homemade persimmon cake laden with rum raisins and crowned with caramel icing.
