Serving well over a hundred different dishes, ranging from dim sum to a whole range of "sizzling" plates, and familiar favorites such as Mongolian beef to exotic adventures like fresh-mango prawns, May Flower offers some of the most authentic Chinese fare in the East Bay. Yet this slender, hushed hideaway with graceful Chinese art on its candy-colored walls, lodged less than a block away from the UC Berkeley campus, remains surprisingly low-profile. To eat here (or to take its generously portioned, finely sauced treasures elsewhere) is to feel fed by someone who cares for you far too much to skimp on ingredients. May Flower's menu also includes many "insider" dishes seldom seen in Stateside restaurants but beloved in Asia, such as pan-fried rice roll in XO sauce and dried-fish-and-peanut porridge. An extensive array of vegetarian items ensures that there's something for everyone.
