Augie's Barbed Wire Smokehouse Restaurant Review:
Augie’s has roofed its outdoor beer garden, making it more weather-friendly but less coolly casual. Inside, the restaurant’s "décor" --- to overstate the term --- retains displays of the namesake barbed wire, along with the requisite beer signs and rusting agrarian implements. As with most barbecue shacks, diners order at a counter where the meats are sliced and trimmed. Get here early in the day for the popular pork ribs. Though it could use a more assertive rub, Augie’s moist brisket rates better than most; consider it in “chopp” sandwich form. We also suggest the pulled pork; it, too, can be had as a “chopp” sandwich mixed with sausage. Sides include creamed corn, coleslaw, mac ‘n’ cheese and potato salad, but only the stewed green beans with onion, bacon and tomato transcend predictability. A separate and more tree-sheltered facility is available for private wine gatherings and other events.
