Bijou Cafe Restaurant Review:

Even on the grayest Portland days, the light streams in through the large windows of this vintage downtown building. There's an old-fashioned yet urban-hip style going on here, and the crowd always seems content and lively. Many of Portland's best breakfast restaurants keep slacker hours, opening at 9 a.m., but those who need or desire an earlier start and still want more than standard bacon and eggs should head for Bijou Cafe. The menu includes huge three-egg and bacon omelets. But be sure to order the hash, whether it’s the oyster or a trendier blend of cauliflower, kale, harissa, potato, feta cheese and olives. Homey, hearty hot cereals brimming with toasted filberts and raisins are also sure to satisfy. Mimosas are made with apple cider. Lunch-seekers may choose from a wide assortment of salads, sandwiches and homemade soups. Friday night suppers featuring live jazz require reservations. Entrées on the limited dinner menu may include creative, homey options such as braised curried lamb shank, radicchio salad, and seared culotte steak with warm potato salad, bacon and arugula. A full bar keeps everyone happy.
