Craftsman & Wolves Restaurant Review:
William Werner's Craftsman & Wolves adds another hip eatery to the overflowing list of places packed into this small block of Valencia. Exposed brick walls, a Parisian feel and a formal pastry counter of wood topped with a blockade of glass and a variety of experimental, evolving and interesting home-style baked goods make for a visually appealing presentation and a reasonable repast. True to their focus, the pastry products are the best bet. A chocolate peanut butter cookie is a fun take on high-end sandwich cookies. Verrines come sweet and savory; our buttermilk verrine with tart red fruits was an enjoyable contrast of creamy and tangy, while the artichoke version on the savory side was somewhat less intriguing. Deviled eggs offer a kick with a few strips of chorizo "marmalade" as toppers, though the Sloppy Joe is relatively straightforward. Macaroni and cheese, made with manchego and carnitas, is the star of the savories, though still a bit mild. Pastry and morning choices abound, and may be the optimal use of this location's craft. Beer and wine by the glass, and a few wines by the half bottle, are also available. Look for an additional Craftsman & Wolves at 1643 Pacific Avenue.
