THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED One of a handful of relatively formal restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter, de'Medici is a haven for conventioneers and well-heeled locals who appreciate homemade food from authentic old-country recipes, passed from generation to generation. We like the restaurant's somewhat late hours and spacious, comfortable terrace. Chef Ricardo Macias has long helmed the kitchen. Try the pasta and veal dishes, and the seafood, which is highlighted, particularly the grilled swordfish. Dramatic tableside service adds to the ambience when ordering the Caesar salad and the famous sole Portofino --- fresh, delicate fish that’s stuffed with lobster, crab and shrimp, then butter-baked in the oven. Or opt for steak Diane, a 12-ounce cut flambéed with Cognac and sherry. For a rich experience, go for the fresh ravioli, plump with Maine lobster in a pink vodka sauce, or the gnocchi in a pool of Gorgonzola and pesto. Finish with tiramisu or bananas Foster with vanilla bean gelato.
