District Restaurant Review:

This Oakland outpost of a San Francisco favorite features the same food and drink menus as its sister across the bay, as well as 60-plus wines served by the glass. Cheese and charcuterie plates let you pick and choose; Humboldt-made Truffle Tremor goat cheese goes down velvety-smooth. Cold plates include jewel-bright shaved-beet salad and steak tartare served with violet mustard and fried quail egg. Hot plates such as crispy escargots, cheese fondue and long-cooked oxtail plated "sombrero" style atop house-made corn tortilla rounds make fun, exciting companions to strong, whimsical cocktails. Look for the Breakfast of Champions made with bacon-infused bourbon and ginger beer, and the Bluegrass with its Four Roses bourbon, maple syrup and fresh lemon, blueberry and rosemary. No white sugar goes into any of the drinks; agave, maple and other sweeteners star instead. On weekends, a buffet-style "bottomless brunch" features comfort foods such as ceviche mixta, cheddar grits, chipotle-garlic potatoes and buttermilk pancakes with banana-rum syrup. A boisterous regular crowd congregates at District, enjoying its upscale, open-plan design, outdoor patio and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
