Homewood Gourmet Restaurant Review:

This casual café doesn't bother much with frills and décor, and there are only a few tables. All eyes train on the chalkboard-style menu behind a deli case as it's loaded with lists of tempting dishes. Customers would riot if the baby blue salad with spicy pecans, oranges and strawberries or the fried green tomato sandwich with goat cheese, ham and peach chutney ever disappeared from the menu, so these remain signature items. Homewood Gourmet has gained a New Orleans twist since co-owners Chris and Laura Zapalowski took over from its founder, chef Franklin Biggs. Because Chris grew up in New Orleans and worked with such chefs as Emeril Lagasse and Anne Kearney, you’ll find such fare as chicken-and-sausage jambalaya with homemade andouille. Red beans and rice is a Monday special, along with creamy chicken potpie. On Wednesday, choose between the Monte Cristo sandwich and a muffaletta. Shrimp and grouper po’ boys have also achieved favorite sandwich status. Take-home casseroles include shepherd’s pie and creamy chicken and black bean enchiladas. Lasagna comes in beef or vegetarian versions. Grab a slice of pound cake or some bread pudding with whiskey sauce for a sweet finish. No alcohol is served.
