A spacious, no-frills cafeteria adjacent to a huge Indian market, India Sweets & Spices draws an eclectic clientele --- everybody from Indian immigrants to eccentric artist types to heavily-tattooed rockers --- with its bargain-priced vegetarian fare. For a little over $5, you can score a combination plate that includes chapati (wheat bread), dal (lentils), raita (a yogurt dish to cool the palate), basmati rice, a huge samosa with chutney, pickles and onion, dessert and a mango lassi. There are also cooked-to-order North and South Indian specialties such as the crêpe-like masala dosa, stewed chickpeas, and a pancake-style uttapam topped with onions. A huge array of sweets includes burfi (similar to fudge) and gulab jamun (cheese-based donuts).
