King's Highway Restaurant Review:
Only the creators of the Ace Hotel could take a tired Denny's restaurant, repurpose it and make it a hip destination. Breakfast dishes include ricotta hot cakes and a hearty house-made granola. Soups, salads, appetizers and sandwiches are served all day. The dinner menu emphasizes rustic flavors, local produce and a sophisticated spin on comfort food. We suggest the roasted half chicken with thyme, oregano, citrus and a cauliflower dahl; a tasty harissa lamb with smoky eggplant purée and spicy chickpea ragoût is a scene-stealer. Desserts are a blend of simple meets sultry, as in sticky (local) date pudding with brandy caramel sauce and vanilla bean gelato; coconut brioche bread pudding with blackberry-thyme compote; and a rich brownie served with gelato. And while Palm Springs tends to roll up the sidewalks a tad early, King's Highway stays open well past midnight, with late-night grazing until 3 a.m. on weekends.
