Mr. Robata Restaurant Review:
Situated just north of Times Square next to Flashdancers, this Japanese spot is easy to miss, which would be a shame for discriminating eaters who might normally have to settle for tourist-packed delis and subpar diners in this part of town. Dimly lit and chic, Mr. Robata has an eclectic menu of Japanese hits performed by a veteran of legendary New York restaurant Sushi of Gari. Start with anything from the robata grill---from unctuous pork belly to fork-tender Wagyu to flavorful mushrooms---all deeply satisfying. Then move on to sushi, the best of which are served in creative fashion: tuna comes topped with a dollop of wasabi mashed potatoes, salmon with a delicate piece of zucchini tempura atop, and o-toro sits underneath mango compote. The moderately priced wine list mostly sticks to Italy, France and California, and there’s a list of creative cocktails to help wash down a memorable meal.
