The Pelican Restaurant Restaurant Review:

When Tahira and Mohammad Sami, a Pakistani immigrant couple, bought this downtown breakfast/lunch spot it served diner food. You can still get pancakes for breakfast and burgers for lunch, but Tahira started adding Indian dishes: a daily poultry/meat curry plus a vegetarian special at lunch; an all-Indian dinner on Friday nights only that has become popular despite a very small menu of the North Indian (mainly Punjabi) items familiar to most Americans, such as chicken korma, tikka masala, vindaloo, biryani, etc. Breakfast is the runaway hit, however, due to selections inspired by Pakistani breakfast classics rarely found in America’s Indian restaurants, but seem, oddly, almost like a fusion of Indian and all-American morning fare. All Indian-inspired breakfasts come with a fusion side, too: toasted naan bread plus home fries, with a cooling yogurt dip that goes well with either. To drink, go native Floridian with fresh-squeezed orange and grapefruit juices, or Indian with smoothie-like lassi, made with creamy fresh yogurt and either sugar or salt (the latter is more traditional and better than sweet lassi for beating Florida’s, or India’s, heat).
