This hard-to-find and disagreeable former New York steakhouse location was reworked by local restaurant designer Bill Johnson and team, emerging as a bright and intriguing space that is at once spare yet welcoming. This is a multi-purpose restaurant, serving lunch for the biz bunch; tapas and drinks to the same denizens after they've abandoned their business digs upstairs for the day; and dinner for families and dating couples. Friends gather at the bar or on the splendid outdoor patio to savor pork rillettes with mustard and cornichons or roasted peppers with Cabrales cheese, among the appetizers. Regional comfort fare is spotlighted. Perfectly tender rabbit might star in one of the dishes, or grilled rare duck breast in another. Braised meats are divine. Don't fail to have the house-made Heath Bar for dessert. Lots of good wines by the glass grace this list, a well-priced assembly that includes four Champagnes and sparkling wines in 375 ml. bottles. Live jazz performed in warm weather.
