Adventurous eaters and the adventure-averse will find something to like on the menu at Mr. Chen’s. Tucked away in an almost hidden strip shopping center in Hoover, an upscale Birmingham suburb, the restaurant offers more than the typical Americanized Chinese fare. There’s sticky rice in lotus leaf, spicy sliced pork ears, stir-fried anchovy with peanuts, and spicy beef tendon. Diners seeking familiar flavors can stick to standards such as shrimp with broccoli, cashew chicken, lo mien or kung pao beef, and be satisfied that they’re eating a better-than-average version of the dish with fresher ingredients. It’s best to get together with friends and feast on an array of food. Orange chicken paired with bok choy with black mushrooms will make a pretty plate. We recommend chicken with black bean sauce, seafood clay pot, eggplant with pork and basil in hot pot, sautéed sweet pea leaves and cumin lamb. A small selection of beer is available. The long list of hot and cold tea drinks, some sweet enough to be suitable as dessert, is reason enough to stop by. Consider tapioca milk Thai tea, passion fruit or mango slush, and a peach flower tea, too.
