THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Mr. Chu's Hong Kong Cuisine Restaurant Review:
THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS CLOSED The upscale Mr. Chu's offers a Hong Kong-style cuisine and eminently proper service. Formerly Thai Toni's, the restaurant is still owned by Toni Takarada, but Mr. Chu's actually pays homage to its chef, a longtime South Florida favorite who trained under Grand Masters in upscale hotels. Expect elegant fare with an emphasis on seafood: crispy silverback fish dusted with Szechuan peppercorn salt (powdered peppercorns and salt stir-fried until the aromas are released); diced chicken and tofu in Chinese anchovy broth served in a clay hot pot; and stir-fried clams with basil. If the oh-so-vermilion décor reminds you of a banquet hall, concentrate instead on the homemade chow fun noodles and signature XO chili sauce. And if the admittedly high prices provoke some squeamishness, go for the treasure finder, a wonderful vegetarian dish that comprises a variety of mushrooms rolled in a bean curd sheet, deep-fried and finally wrapped in foil and steamed. Consider it a fortune cookie: Your stomach full, you'll soon forget your wallet's empty.
