It might sound like the set-up to an old joke, but thanks to the lifelong friendship between the owners, the Irish-styled bar and the Italian-themed kitchen at Murphy & Scarletti's manage to get along famously. Located in The Exchange, a retail and office complex across the street from the UConn Medical Center, this lively hangout attracts med students, doctors and other professionals who crave a laid-back change of pace after a rigorous day. Hearty pub grub is, of course, in abundance---with loads of starters, salads and sandwiches to choose from---but we tend to head in the direction of the decidedly Italian entrées, such as the penne ala vodka. Numerous toppings are available for the brick oven-baked pizzas, though we recommend the signature white goat-cheese pie with grilled chicken, fresh tomato and spinach.
