The large Vietnamese population in the New Orleans metro area has spawned a number of respectable restaurants featuring Vietnamese cuisine. Namese brings a contemporary twist to traditional Vietnamese dishes. What once was an auto repair shop has been architecturally reborn as a Vietnamese restaurant. Situated on the busy intersection of Tulane and Carrollton Avenues, Namese is just far back enough from the traffic to offer a quiet meal. Start with five spice fried tofu or a spicy modern take on crab Rangoon. Entrées excel with sticky sweet ribs marinated with Asian spices, and a truly memorable garlic shrimp dish. Likely unique in New Orleans is a pressed braised duck sandwich with bacon and cheese. Wines are limited but thoughtfully selected, including the Domaine Scherrer Pinot Blanc, which goes nicely with almost anything on the menu. Be sure to stay for dessert --- the fried bun filled with Bavarian cream is a winner. You can also opt for a flavored bubble tea.
