: In 2000, city councilwoman Mary Rose Wilcox and her husband Earl took over the historic but decrepit El Portal, spiffed it up, changed the menu and reopened as The New El Portal --- a clean, well-lit place that played to downtown business people and local politicos. Now it should be called The New-New El Portal, since it closed again in 2010, and the Wilcox duo once more debuted it in 2014. The shine is gone, but the hearty soups (which change daily) are still good, and the Sonoran dishes are homey and authentic. Best bets include the chile relleno, the red chile plate and the carne asada taco, complete with guacamole and radish garnish. |
