On the fringe of the pretty, riverside Overlook area, Pause is everything a neighborhood restaurant should be. Strong cocktails and an excellent selection of microbrews on tap mean a friendly bar. But the young children running about attest to the place’s welcoming, unpretentious nature. The regular menu centers on home-style American standards: Reubens, meatloaf, turkey sandwiches, burgers (beef and homemade veggie). Fries are hand-cut, and pickles are also house-made. You'll find an eclectic selection of tasty specials, such as pork tenderloin saltimbocca with sage bacon, an herbed polenta cake and wilted greens, or blackened seared albacore with daikon cucumber slaw, crispy jícama rice cake and ginger-soy vinaigrette. Portions are generous. English toffee pudding is a sweet, sticky indulgence for dessert. On warm summer evenings, the outdoor garden, complete with picnic tables and raised beds overflowing with tomato vines, is a fine place to hang out. On busy nights, you may have to wait, and service can be slow.
