Many local coffeehouses didn’t make it when the national chains invaded Cleveland, but Phoenix Coffee Co. is still around and going strong---possibly because its founder, Carl Jones, opened the city’s first coffeehouse chain, Arabica, long before the national players moved in. All locations serve up strong coffee and fresh pastries. The Lakewood Phoenix is a tiny shop, located across the street from two Goliaths---Caribou and veteran coffeehouse Arabica---but it carries on nonetheless.
