Island Prime Restaurant Review:
Island Prime, the joint creation of restaurant moguls the Cohn Restaurant Group and chef Deborah Scott, may just have the best view in town. Situated across the harbor from San Diego proper, it looks out across the growing array of skyscrapers and the twinkling lights of boats on the bay. The interior is sumptuous, mixing island accents with sleek glass, dark wood and polished stone. Order up a Deborah's Mai Tai to get into the vacation spirit whether you are a local or visiting. Appetizers favor crustaceans, like the Study in Lobster: lobster tostada, lobster sherry bisque and lobster-Fontina grilled cheese. Another solid choice is the seared ahi stack with blue crab salad, avocado, papaya-mango salsa, taro chips and caviar. Among main courses, we like the filet mignon trio with wild mushrooms, Gorgonzola and blue crab, and a pile of sea salt mashed potatoes. For a healthy entrée, try the crusted ahi in a soy caramel, citrus-brown butter beurre blanc with ginger, and garlic black rice and charred asparagus. Purists might object, but we go for the banana split, which combines a chocolate-dipped frozen banana, chocolate-topped banana bread pudding and peanut butter ice cream with caramelized bananas. Down below, C-Level is a walk-in bar and eatery with fun cocktails and more views.
