| Island Prime, the joint creation of local restaurant moguls the Cohns and chef Debra Scott, may just have the best view in town. Situated across the harbor from San Diego proper, it looks out across the growing array of skyscrapers and the twinkling lights of boats on the bay. The interior is sumptuous, mixing island accents with sleek glass, dark wood and polished stone. Appetizers appear as a study in lobster (lobster tostada, lobster sherry bisque and lobster Fontina grilled cheese). Among main courses, we like the filet mignon trio with wild mushrooms, Gorgonzola and blue crab, and the hazelnut-crusted diver scallops. Scott offers healthy items like her everything-crusted ahi, sushi-grade yellowfin seared rare and dusted in a mélange of spices, served with black forbidden rice and pineapple salsa in a ginger soy reduction. Purists might object, but we go for the banana split, which combines a chocolate-dipped frozen banana, chocolate-topped banana bread pudding and peanut butter ice cream with caramelized bananas. |
