THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Randall's Cafe, Wine Bar & Cheesecakery Restaurant Review:
Pastry cases filled with thick slices of cheesecake greet you when you step into this intimate restaurant, more reminiscent of a French fromagerie than an American bakery. Warm lighting reflects off brick walls in the narrow room, where each of the 15 or so tables are topped with linen and a single rose. You could pop the question in this romantic setting and actually be heard. The menu suggests cheesecake as an appetizer---novel versions made with smoked salmon and black caviar or pesto, feta, asparagus, olives and wild mushrooms. A more traditional selection, tomato-fennel soup, balances the two strong vegetable flavors with a whisk of cream swirled into the light stock. Creative daily specials include chicken sautéed with mushrooms and garlic, folded into a flour tortilla with melted Fontina cheese and asparagus. The user-friendly wine list is broad yet finely edited, offering a mix of Californians and internationals. If you havent ordered any cheesecake, take a slice home for a divine bedtime snack.
