Restaurant Mitsunobu Restaurant Review:
Nestled in the corner of the Sharon Heights shopping center, this high-end Japanese establishment offers a relaxing and quiet respite from the day. The small restaurant and sushi bar is a favorite of nearby Sand Hill venture capitalists for lunch as well as locals seeking a formal dinner. The tasting menu varies monthly and delivers a balance of classic presentation, California influence and unique delicacies. Smoked firefly squid are tiny bites of barbecued elegance, and hokkai uni lends a custard-like addition to several dishes in authentic Japanese style. Sauces are thoughtfully prepared, and local and distinctly Japanese vegetables and garnishes finish off many dishes (Japanese butterbur is a highlight). Touches of molecular gastronomy are woven throughout the menu, from spherification and slow-cooked egg to a deconstructed trifle. Desserts are true to tradition: light and modestly sweet, with green tea and white sesame ice creams on the menu and mango mochi; or try the creamy demitasse-size Jidori tamago flan. While the wine list is somewhat limited, the saké selection excels --- take advantage of saké pairings with the tasting menu. Be aware: The restaurant is closed the last Sunday of each month.
