Restaurante La Valentina Restaurant Review: Somehow, “fancy” Mexican doesn’t feel right in a mall, but La Valentina’s menu offers a lot more than the usual enchilada plate. Among its impressive-sounding list of regional specialties are the chalupas poblanas (a Puebla delicacy of small tostadas and pulled pork, with salsa and onions), chicken in tamarind mole, and the pescado Esmeralda (grilled fish in lime sauce) as well as fish Veracuz-style (grilled with a spicy tomato ragoût). But an appetizer of cilantro soup may arrive watery and not sufficiently hot, and most disappointingly, rather flavorless. The filete meztlí veteado (mignon medallions with butter and huitlacoche) shows up undercooked yet oddly tough. Where did all the promising flavor go? La Valentina looks great on paper but ultimately is somewhat disappointing. |
