Sotto Mare, San Francisco, CA

Sotto Mare Restaurant Review

: You can’t get any more real than Sotto Mare and a big reason for the realness is owners Gigi Fiorucci and Giovanni Toracca, longtime North Beach fixtures known to many on a first name basis. The staff is made up of family and friends --- all characters --- who love to shoot the breeze with the regulars. The long granite counter has room for 37 people to slurp dollar oysters and clams on the half shell and wash it down with a selection from the small, nicely priced wine list or a bottle of Italian beer. You can also get a fresh whole cracked Dungeness crab, a no-nonsense crab Louie big enough for two, some of Mom’s traditional baccalà, and even a pint to go of some of the best clam chowder we’ve had in a while. Don’t miss the daily special --- catch the fishermen bring in that morning, and as the menu says, when they’re out, they’re out. Try the rustic linguine with clams and sweet sand dabs lightly dusted with flour and pan-fried in olive oil and butter. No dessert.
