Don’t let its ominous all-black brick exterior scare you: there’s nothing scary going on at Sushi X. Rather, this River West restaurant delivers some 30 topnotch rolls in a chic, lounge-like atmosphere with dark blue and silver walls, techno music and Japanese cartoons projected on the wall. There’s a varied selection of hot appetizers, including an asparagus beef roll, gyoza and tempura. But most of the diners opt for platters of rolls, which range from more complicated numbers like the tasty white tiger (tuna, hamachi, salmon, asparagus, avocado, cucumber, jalapeño, scallions, tempura flakes, wasabi mayo and cilantro) to the basic California and spicy tuna. A BYOB policy and early-bird specials mean more money in your wallet, but be prepared to wait if you show up at peak hours.
