When this eatery opened, we were startled to find that the kitchen had taken some of our beloved Thai classics and interpreted them in a totally contemporary way. Despite such breaks from tradition, the whole menu seemed to work, and patrons were not left longing for the more familiar fare. Indeed, Sweet Basil established itself as a go-to destination in Bethesda. After a turn at presenting some Westernized fare, the restaurant's menu now reads solidly Thai and traditional. Look for appetizers such as turnip cakes with fried eggs, and prawns wrapped in noodles and deep-fried; entrées include green curry with shrimp, and pork with eggplant in red curry. You'll find, as at most other Thai restaurants, a selection of vegetarian and all-noodle dishes. Dessert choices are kept to a minimum, with the mango and sticky rice offering perhaps the most Thai of the offerings.
