Tucked away in a small strip mall and housed in a former gas station, Tempo Restaurant brings classic Italian food with some French overtones to Alexandria, and in a very humble setting. The lunchtime menu is a shorter, more casual array of options, so if you are looking for a full-on splurge, plan to visit for dinner and ask for the wine lists, which present plenty of good choices. As starters, the three fried cheeses (including anchovies) and the house special crab soup may kick off the meal. Seafood lovers should consider the platter of fritto misto (fried seafood), the fried red snapper or the linguine tossed with seafood. The kitchen offers a trio of variations of veal scaloppini plus a robust medallion of beef with Roquefort cheese. Lamb chops with shallots in a wine sauce is also a temptation. Among the many desserts are Key lime pie, bread pudding and panna cotta. An abbreviated Sunday brunch menu has omelets, french toast and angel hair pasta with pancetta and poached eggs.
