Terrapin Crossroads, San Rafael, CA

Terrapin Crossroads Restaurant Review

: Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh set up his encore career when he opened Terrapin Crossroads, an eatery with a seasonal menu and toe-tapping live music every night. The menu has a farm-to-table sensibility with dishes such as fried squash blossoms and stone fruit salad in the middle of summer, as well as Southern fried chicken, barbecued ribs and cioppino, selections that anchor the food in the heart of American comfort. There are plenty of meatless options, such as homemade gnocchi with vegetables, and pizzas from the wood-fired oven make a satisfying snack. All desserts are made in-house --- try the banana caramel tart for a sugar buzz. The lively bar includes an intimate stage set in the core of the restaurant with bands playing during happy hour and later in the evening, as well as an interesting list of wines on tap, artisan beers and specialty cocktails. Worn-wood siding, cozy lounge areas with clubby leather couches and booth seating create a relaxed atmosphere. Outside, extensive patios front the San Rafael canal offering one of the best outdoor dining spaces in Marin County. A separate, additional concert spot requires ticketing; visit the website for show details.
