U-Zen Restaurant Review:
This is one of those ubiquitous, easy-to-miss sushi bars scattered across the Westside. It's also one of the relatively few that would be a shame to miss. The sushi is prepared by skilled chefs who also have a good sense of humor. Bluefin toro almost melts on the tongue, and we've also been impressed with the uni, sockeye salmon, albacore and luminous squid that's not even remotely rubbery. Plates of sashimi are generously portioned, a wide selection of rolls satisfies the less orthodox among us, and a decent list of premium sakés is offered. Though more American in tradition than Japanese, the decadent tempura fried ice cream is simultaneously crunchy, cold and hot. The relatively attractive digs consist of a lacquered blond wood sushi bar facing a colorful mural, a communal table in the center of the dining room, cozy booths, and some nicely framed Japanese art and masks on the walls.
