THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Ventanas Restaurant Review:
Walking into this West Chelsea restaurant---located on a strip of Tenth Avenue that is already lined with hip, upscale eateries---is like entering another world. Or an entirely different nation, at least. The dimly lit interior oozes an Arabic vibe, with Islamic arches and Persian rugs accenting the design. It turns out, however, that this all evokes Moorish Spain. The menu isn’t as exacting in its theme, which is fine, especially when the tapas are this good. The morcilla, or blood sausage, is a stand-out for its tenderness and complex, slightly spicy flavors; the oxtail empanadas are refreshingly flaky; and the ham croquettes are done just right---crisp on the outside and gooey within. There are several (pricey) house cocktails and a large selection of Spanish wines. Try the crunchy churros (and accompanying chocolate dipping sauce) for dessert.
